Craven County families without bus assignments may wait up to 10 days, schools say

NEW BERN, Craven County — Craven County Schools says families still waiting for a bus assignment at the start of the school year could face a wait of up to 10 days

The district provided the update after News 12 heard concerns from Craven County families about student transportation

Craven County Schools asked families to submit transportation requests in the spring

However, students who are new to the area or whose families missed part of the request process may still need to be added to an existing bus route

Transportation Director Jermaine Smith said adding students can require additional work behind the scenes, especially in newer neighborhoods

Smith said transportation staff may need to review GIS maps, check available turn points and determine whether buses can safely travel through certain communities or subdivisions

“Once we have new students added to a bus, it could be an area that the bus has never traveled in with the new housing developments that have occurred and that’s opening up in Craven County,” Smith said

He said the district then has to determine whether the route can safely accommodate the new stop

Craven County Schools transports about 8,500 students

The district operates 155 buses that travel more than 1 million miles each year

Families who still need to request bus transportation should contact their child’s school
