Another country joins the UK in tightening student visas for applicants from Nigeria, India, Bangladesh and China over document and financial fraud
- New Zealand has increased scrutiny of international student visa applications due to concerns over fraudulent documents and misleading financial information from applicants from Nigeria, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and China.
- Visa refusals in New Zealand surged to 6,273 between July and September 2026, raising the rejection rate to 34% during that period.
- Sharp increases in visa rejection rates were noted for Bangladesh (70%) and India (39%), but equivalent data for Nigeria, China, and Nepal were not released.
- While the UK has introduced nationality-specific restrictions, New Zealand emphasizes that its visa refusals are based on individual application assessments rather than targeting all students from specific countries.
The development comes amid a sharp rise in student visa refusals in New Zealand, where immigration authorities rejected 6,273 full-fee applications between July and September 2026, nearly matching the 7,503 refusals recorded throughout the previous financial year
The rejection rate climbed to 34% during the three-month period, up from 13% in the 2025–26 financial year, according to figures reported by Radio New Zealand (RNZ)
Immigration New Zealand attributed part of the increase to closer scrutiny of applications for master’s degree programmes, amid growing concerns about fraudulent supporting documents
“INZ is seeing increasingly sophisticated fraud in student visa applications, including genuine documents being altered, reused or repurposed across multiple applications to make those applications appear legitimate,” the agency said
Such concerns have emerged in applications from several countries, including major international student recruitment markets
“These issues are not unique to Bangladesh or India. Recent declined applications from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria and China have included concerns about fraud or false or misleading information,” the agency said
However, the concerns relate to specific applications and do not imply wrongdoing by all students from the countries identified

Bangladesh and India recorded particularly sharp increases in rejection rates between July and September 2026, with Immigration New Zealand refusing 70% and 39% of applications from the two countries, respectively, nearly double their usual rates
However, the agency did not release comparable refusal rates for Nigeria, China or Nepal during the period
Despite the rise in refusals, New Zealand continues to attract applications from major international education markets, as tighter immigration policies in countriessuch as Canada, Australia and the United States reshape overseas study options
“In the 2026 calendar year to date, offshore student visa applications from India have made up 22% of offshore volume received (9103), China 21% (8751), Bangladesh 9% (3858) and Nepal 7% (2924),” Immigration New Zealand said
Alongside the growing demand, immigration advisers have raised concerns about recruitment agents submitting inaccurate financial information on behalf of applicants, with authorities also identifying cases of reused financial documents
“Fraud can involve groups of applications rather than just individual applicants and can be facilitated by agents. We regularly identify financial evidence being reused across multiple applications,”the agency said
Similar concerns over immigration abuse have prompted tighter controls in the United Kingdom, whererestrictions introduced on March 26, 2026 affected new overseas student visa applications from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan
Britain also strengthened <a href="https://jiuniversity.com/uk-study-visa-application-withdrawals-surge-amidst-new-bca-compliance-requirements/” title=”UK: Study visa application withdrawals surge amidst new BCA compliance requirements”>compliance requirements for universities, while the Financial Times reported that some institutions withdrew admission offers from applicants in Nigeria, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh over concerns about exceeding visa refusal thresholds
Unlike Britain, which introduced nationality-specific restrictions, New Zealand maintains that its recent refusals result from individual assessments of applications and supporting documents
