WASHINGTON — New evidence from EuroMOMO revealed the heat wave that smothered Western Europe in late June may be linked to an unprecedented spike in deaths during the June 22-28 period exceeding 10,000 people
EuroMOMO specifically tracks the “excess deaths recorded” among its member countries, which are notable departures from the expected mortality patterns that normally increase in the winter and decrease in the summer
Across the continent, public health agencies’ heat-related mortality data are reflecting this grim reality despite differences in the time frames used for analysis
France’s excess mortality, collected by the French national public health agency, showed a similar spike during the June 22-28 time frame, with public health organizations reporting that 2,025 deaths are attributable to the heat wave.

Belgium’s mortality data, collected by Sciensano, reported in a July 10 LinkedIn post that excess mortality peaked unusually in the larger time frame of June 18 – July 1, with 1,747 more deaths than expected recorded during the heat wave
Germany also saw a similar jump in excess deaths Nearly 5,120 heat-related deaths have occurred so far in 2026, with the majority occurring during the June heat wave, when temperatures soared to 104 degrees Fahrenheit across the country
In the United Kingdom, approximations released from the Met Office, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, as well as Imperial College London, used statistical modeling to estimate that nearly 2,200 individuals may have died in just England and Wales due to the extreme heat in late June
The data released by EuroMOMO does not distinguish the mortality rates by country, but its aggregate formed from input by 27 countries shows over 9,000 of these deaths during June 22-28 occurring among those aged 65 or over
This information was gathered as part of the excess mortality data collected by EuroMOMO, which was founded in 2008 and is backed by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control and the World Health Organization, and sorts this information by age and weekly intervals
