EDMONDS, Wash. —The Edmonds School District, which serves more than 20,000 students across south Snohomish County, will soon be changing school attendance boundaries
Hundreds of students will be moved to other campuses, in part, to make room for a new school and to help balance enrollment numbers, according to a Boundary Review Committee
“We haven’t gotten any strong answers as to why this is the right decision,” Hilltop Elementary School parent Ashish Buddha explained
Buddha told KOMO News he still feels left in the dark after attending Edmonds School District board meetings for six months to speak out against the boundary revisions
The board voted unanimously, 4-0, to accept the changes starting in fall 2028. That’s when Buddha said his kids would have to relocate from Hilltop to Hazelwood
“It is three times the distance, and it is not the same proficiency level as Hilltop, so I would seriously consider whether I want to live in this community,” Buddha stated. “I’ll move somewhere else.”
A district Boundary Review Committee has studied changes to school attendance boundaries for the first time in three decades as the ESD prepares for the new Salish Middle School, opening in fall 2028
The district is also reconfiguring elementary schools to a K-5 model, moving sixth graders into middle schools. ESD said it aims to evenly distribute the number of students, staff, and re
“About 14% of elementary students will be reassigned under this plan,” board Director Thom Garrard said
Parents from other schools affected by the change had urged the board to push its vote to January so it could get more family input
“We continue to have unanswered questions regarding student safety and transportation,” one parent said
Alison Hammerand told KOMO News her two Seaview Elementary students would move to Lynndale Elementary
“I don’t know why. There’s no reason. Any feedback or concerns that I have have not been addressed,” Hammerand stated
Sherwood Elementary School parent Michelle Marcoux explained her kids would go to Westgate Elementary
“Changing school environments drastically affects their mental health and school performance, and we just feel like we’re being ignored,” Marcoux added
After nearly an hour of public comment at the Oct. 27 board meeting, Garrard was the only board director to speak before the vote
“I understand transitions can be hard,” he explained. “By enacting this plan now, we allow staff a year and a half to figure out how to make this transition as smooth as possible for all of those students.”
KOMO News asked the school district and the four voting board members for a response to parents’ claims that their voices and concerns were not considered in this plan, but did not hear back by news time Tuesday
