The Togolese Ministry of Energy and the Russian public group Rosatom signed a memorandum on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy on Wednesday, October 28, in Moscow. The document aims to assess the potential for joint projects
Alexei Likhachev, CEO of Rosatom, and Robert Koffi Messan Eklo, Togolese Minister Delegate for Energy, signed the agreement on the sidelines of the Russia-Africa summit. Working groups will examine energy applications and other uses of nuclear technologies, as well as training needs and infrastructure development
Among the proposals put forward by Rosatom is the use of floating nuclear units to generate electricity. These facilities would carry their reactors on maritime units transported to a suitable site. This option remains at the stage of exploring cooperation possibilities, with no construction plans announced in Togo
The collaboration comes as Lomé strengthens its regulatory framework. On June 9, 2026, the National Assembly adopted four bills concerning nuclear safety conventions, management of spent fuel and radioactive waste, as well as notification and assistance in the event of an accident
The site for a potential installation, its funding, and its timeline for completion have not been disclosed
