The University of California San Diego has remained at No. 4 among U.S. public universities in the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities. The highly regarded annual assessment released by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy also places UC San Diego 14th among all U.S. universities and 20th in the world

“To be recognized among the top public universities in the nation, and among the best universities in the world, is a reflection of what makes UC San Diego truly exceptional – the brilliance and dedication of our faculty, students and alumni,” said Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. “The Academic Ranking of World Universities measures the very things we hold central to our mission – the quality of our scholarship, the reach of our research and the achievements of our alumni community. Year after year, our community continues to meet the standard, advancing knowledge that addresses the world’s greatest challenges and creating opportunity for generations to come.”

Each year, the ARWU evaluates more than 2,500 institutions and publishes only the top 1,000. Universities are ranked by several academic and research performance indicators, including the number of alumni and faculty who have been awarded Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; recognitions of highly cited researchers; papers published in the journals Nature and Science; articles in leading citation indices; and the per-capita academic performance.

UC San Diego’s standing in the ARWU reflects the extraordinary caliber of scholars — faculty and alumni — whose work is recognized at the highest levels of academic and scientific achievement

UC San Diego alumnus Fred Ramsdell was awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, along with colleagues Mary Brunkow and Shimon Sakaguchi, for their pioneering work in immunology. Ramsdell, a 1983 UC San Diego graduate in biochemistry and cell biology, helped identify the gene Foxp3, which controls a critical set of cells that prevent the immune system from attacking the body’s own tissues. The discovery has opened the door to new therapies for autoimmune diseases such as arthritis, Crohn’s disease and multiple sclerosis, with several biotech companies now putting these cells into patients in hopes of achieving a cure.

That same spirit of discovery extends across the campus’s faculty who have been recognized by some of the world’s most prestigious scientific and scholarly institutions. Distinguished Professor of Chemistry Mark H. Thiemens was awarded the Magellanic Premium, the oldest scientific medal in the Americas, in recognition of his groundbreaking work in isotope research that transformed the study of climate change, planetary evolution and more. Farooq Azam, a Scripps Institution of Oceanography professor emeritus, was named a Kyoto Prize laureate — Japan’s highest private award recognizing global achievement in science, technology and the arts — for his discovery of the “microbial loop,” a foundational concept that transformed the understanding of the ocean’s role in sustaining life and regulating the planet. Daniel M. Kane, a computer science and mathematics professor, was awarded the 2026 Gӧdel Prize, one of the highest honors in theoretical computer science. In addition, Nancy Cartwright, distinguished professor of philosophy, was named the 2026 Frontiers of Knowledge Awardee in Humanities for her leading contributions to the philosophy of science and her influential work in evidence-based policy. In 2025, Brandon Som, associate professor of literature, received a Guggenheim Fellowship, a grant based on both prior career achievement – which, for Som, includes a 2024 Pulitzer Prize in poetry – and exceptional promise.

UC San Diego also leads in research with meaningful, real-world impact. The San Diego Supercomputer Center at the Halıcıoğlu School of Data Science and Computing will serve as the testing ground for a new $8.48 million California Energy Commission (CEC) funded project that could transform how AI data centers receive and manage electricity. The project will make SDSC one of the first operational AI data centers in the U.S. to demonstrate a new power architecture designed to reduce energy waste, lower costs and improve grid reliability.

And from bench to bedside, Catriona Jamieson, director of the UC San Diego Sanford Stem Cell Institute, professor of medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine and chief of its Division of Regenerative Medicine, discovered rebecsinib, a first-in-class investigational drug that inhibits the ADAR1 gene, which is involved in the proliferation of more than 20 cancers. Jamieson has sent multiple research payloads to the ISS, testing the drug on various highly lethal cancers involving ADAR1, such as ovarian cancer, metastatic breast cancer, AML and glioblastoma multiforme — experiments made possible by millions in grants from NASA’s In-Space Production Applications program. Rebecsinib is among the first drugs ever studied in space, and a clinical trial is now underway at UC San Diego – a remarkable journey of discovery from the cosmos to the bedside of patients who need it most.
