The University of Sydney has ranked 79th globally in the latest ShanghaiRanking Academic Ranking of World Universities 2026, retaining its place in the top global 100

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU)ranks more than 2500 universities worldwide and publishes the top 1000 results; it is released annually by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy

ARWU has ranked the world’s top universities annually since 2003, using objective third-party data. 

Its rankings methodology uses six indicators including highly cited researchers, papers published in the prestigious journals Nature and Science, papers indexed in prominent citation databases, per capita performance of academics and the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals. 

Recent research findings

The University’s most recent research include: 

• a global study from the  Governing Immersive Tech team showing how ‘smart glasses’ technology is outpacing safeguards designed to protect people.
• a Science journal publication with the University of Glasgow on how sugar may have helped fuel the evolution of the human brain.  
• how high-dose vitamin B6 supplements remain widely purchased despite safety concerns
•  returning native bush rats to Sydney bushland to restore one of the city’s overlooked engineers of ecosystem health while testing new approaches to wildlife reintroductions
• a report with the NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association showing nurses and midwives urgently need better flexibility to improve working conditions and workforce sustainability 
• a report creating Australia’s first AI Exposure Index for all 150 federal electorates, revealing where AI-driven changes to work could have the greatest political impact

Recent rankings success

The University recently ranked 28th globally in the latest QS World University Rankings and 31st globally in the US News World Rankings, confirming our strong position among the world’s top universities. 

In the latest THE World University Rankings the University of Sydney ranked 53rd in the world overall, rising eight places globally

The University also had 10 subjects ranked in the global top 25 and 31 in the top 50 in the most recent QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 and six disciplines in the global top 50 in the latest THE subject rankings.
