Nigeria has retained its position as Africa’s leading beneficiary of the European Union’s Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Scholarship Programme, with 89 Nigerians receiving fully funded scholarships for the 2026 academic cycle
In addition, 163 Nigerians secured admission into Erasmus Mundus master’s programmes, placing the country among the top five globally for admissions into the prestigious postgraduate scheme
Speaking at the 2026 Erasmus Mundus Pre-Departure Orientation in Abuja, the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, said the latest figures reflect Nigeria’s strong performance in one of the world’s most competitive international scholarship programmes
He noted that the number of Nigerian scholarship recipients increased from 81 in 2025 to 89 in 2026, adding that nearly 1,000 Nigerians have benefited from the programme since 2014
The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s programme enables students to study at two or more European universities over 12 to 24 months before earning joint, double or multiple master’s degrees from participating institutions
Mignot said the European Union would continue collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC) and Nigerian universities to expand access to international education and strengthen the country’s global talent pipeline
He described the programme as an important platform for developing highly skilled professionals by providing participants with advanced knowledge, international exposure and cross-cultural learning opportunities
Representing the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, Director of Students, Dr. Chinelo Nwosu, commended the European Union for its continued investment in higher education and human capital development in Nigeria
Similarly, Director of the Department of Scholarship Awards at the Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs. Liman K.A.A., urged beneficiaries to uphold academic excellence and represent Nigeria positively throughout their studies
One of the scholarship recipients, Oluchi Yulis Myron, said the opportunity would enable her to pursue graduate studies in cultural management while gaining international experience and global best practices that could contribute to the growth of Nigeria’s creative and cultural industries
