French gas industry federation France gaz has unveiled its forward-looking study Perspectives gaz 2050, dedicated to the decarbonization pathways of France’s energy system. The report comes as European gas markets remain under pressure, as illustrated by the way Germany will get through the winter on gas, at a high cost, according to Equinor. According to France gaz, the use of renewable and low-carbon gases, combined with better management of consumption, would sharply reduce the cost of the transition for industrial users and households. The organization estimates investment savings of €330 billion to €460 billion generated by its two scenarios compared with the reference scenario of France’s National Low-Carbon Strategy (SNBC) by 2050, with more than half of these savings materializing before 2035.

Two scenarios for carbon neutrality by 2050
France gaz has built two distinct scenarios to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. The first emphasizes the development of local ecosystems favoring renewable gas production within a circular economy approach. The second relies on an ambitious industrial revival combined with stronger international trade. Both trajectories rest on a gradual decline in gas consumption, which could reach between 221 and 278 TWh in 2050, a drop of between 27% and 42% compared with current levels.
Expected effects from climate change, energy efficiency and equipment hybridization should drive a significant decline in consumption in the building and industrial sectors, according to the study. Liquid gas consumption would follow a similar trend, falling from 20 TWh to 14 TWh by 2050. The mobility sector stands as an exception: gas in the form of bioCNG, bioLNG and e-methane is expected to see its share grow to help decarbonize road and maritime transport. The expansion of biomethane across French regions, illustrated by College Group connecting its Nobber biomethane plant to Ireland’s gas grid, reflects this local production momentum.
Lower investment costs driven by demand reduction
The expected gains would mainly stem from more rational investment choices, according to France gaz. Residential and industrial customers would benefit from more efficient or hybrid equipment tailored to their technical and financial needs. The building renovation trajectory rests on assumptions the organization describes as ambitious but realistic. Gas infrastructure sizing would remain stable, supported from 2029 by hydrogen infrastructure, which France gaz says would ensure the resilience of the energy system.
Available biomass potential would be enough to cover France’s renewable and low-carbon gas production dynamics, the organization says. It points to the rising output of biomethane across French regions, the emergence of new sectors for non-methanizable waste, and the development of bio-LPG for diffuse uses in rural areas. “Perspectives gaz 2050 demonstrates that maintaining a diversified energy mix, greening usages and technological innovations represent an opportunity for our country’s energy sovereignty,” said Frédéric Martin, president of France gaz. He added that renewable gases allow for a decarbonization policy that requires reasonable effort from industry and households.
A market under pressure
This work comes amid a global gas market marked by price volatility and supply tensions across Europe. France gaz represents the entire French gas industry, from natural gas to hydrogen, including renewable gases and liquid gases. The organization, a member of France’s Conseil supérieur de l’énergie and the Mouvement des entreprises de France (Medef), also belongs to the European associations Eurogas and Marcogaz, as well as the International Gas Union.
