Indian Institutions In QS Rankings Rise From 11 To 52

India’s global university presence expands as more institutions improve their positions beyond the traditional IIT-led rankings

India’s representation in the QS World University Rankings has seen a sharp increase since the launch of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), the Centre informed the Lok Sabha on Monday. The number of Indian institutions in the rankings has increased from 11 in 2015 to 52 in the 2027 edition. The latest rankings also show that the improvement is spreading beyond the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), with 26 of the 52 Indian institutions moving up in the rankings.

Rankings Gain Broader ParticipationNIRF, which is also known as the National Institutional Ranking Framework, was brought into use in 2015 and has been working with an aim to rank Indian higher education institutions and promote the competitive spirit among them. Its evaluation includes parameters like teaching-learning, research, graduation outcomes, inclusivity, and reputation. 

The participation in the rankings has also grown immensely over time. The number of <a href="https://jiuniversity.com/applications-now-open-for-uk-governments-2027-28-chevening-scholarships/” title=”Applications now open for UK government's 2027-28 Chevening Scholarships”>applications to NIRF has surged from merely 6,272 in 2021 to over 14,163 in 2025, while the unique number of institutions has also changed from 4,030 to 7,692 during this span. 

The QS World University Rankings 2027 also indicates how the achievements of Indian institutions have become broader and cover every institution in the country, as out of the 52 institutions included in the rankings, 26 have improved their rankings while nine kept their rankings intact, and 15 declined

Non-IIT Institutions Make GainsIIT Delhi was ranked as the best university in India at 118th position with a five-point improvement over last year. IIT Bombay, on the other hand, fell five places in the rankings at 134th position. IIT Madras has improved its rank to 170th while IIT Kharagpur has been placed at 205th position. IISc Bangalore is ranked at 221st place. 

As for non-IITs, VIT gained 94 ranks to be at 597th position while BITS Pilani jumped 93 spots to be at 575th position. IIT Hyderabad gained 76 places, while Jamia Milia Islamia gained about 75 positions to be at 686th place. Shoolini University gained 51 spots. 

The Ministry has attributed this overall improvement to the implementation of the NEP 2020 policies for promoting insights on multi-disciplinary education, innovations, emphasis on teacher training, infrastructure and University Grants Commission recognition and centres of excellence, as a part of which 43 institutions have been conceived since 2014, along with 7 IITs, 8 Central universities and 9 IIMs.
