Students invited to explore career opportunities at Pittsburgh Connect, Nov. 23 | Penn State University
PITTSBURGH — Students interested in career development and networking with professionals in the Pittsburgh area can register to attend Pittsburgh Connect: Penn State Student Networking Summit. The annual event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 23, at the Franco Harris Pittsburgh Center at Penn State in the Energy Innovation Center
Pittsburgh Connect is designed exclusively for Penn State students who are eager to explore career opportunities and develop connections in the Pittsburgh job market. The event is free and open to all students regardless of campus, year or major. Students are encouraged to register by Nov. 16, and walk-ins will be accepted
Justin Aglio, associate vice president for Penn State Outreach and executive director for the Readiness Institute at Penn State, said Pittsburgh Connect provides a unique experience for students
“Pittsburgh Connect is the perfect opportunity for students to explore a diverse and thriving workforce,” Aglio said. “Students are invited to attend this engaging event to discover high-demand career pathways and internship opportunities and develop relationships with potential employers and industry leaders while learning more about how to be community and future ready.”
Pittsburgh Connect workshops include “Networking 101” presented by Penn State Behrend Career Services, “You Got the Offer! Now What?” presented by Penn State Alumni Career Services and “The Career Readiness Inventory” presented by Penn State Career Services
Sue Chappell, associate director for Penn State Career Services, said Pittsburgh Connect will assist students in developing their career-readiness skills
“Students who take the initiative to attend events like this are advancing their own proficiency across the Career and Self-Development competency, one of the eight National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Core Competencies that employers have highlighted as key to student success in the workplace,” Chappell said. “Students who actively explore their career interests, advance their professional skills through experiential learning and build strategic community and industry relationships will be well positioned when they are ready to launch their careers.”
Attending employers include American Eagle Outfitters, BPMI, Carnegie Museums, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Exus Renewables North America, FBI Criminal Justice Information Services Division and the FBI Pittsburgh Field Office, First National Bank, Highmark Health, Industrial Scientific, MarketSpace Agency, Michael Baker <a href="https://jiuniversity.com/international-students-could-see-a-massive-fee-increase-for-opt-work-visa/” title=”International students could see a massive fee increase for OPT work visa”>International, Pittsburgh Penguins, PPG and UPMC Corporate Services
Julie Evanchak, an advertising and public relations major in the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications, said last year’s event showed her how to stand out in a competitive job market
“I really enjoyed the personal branding workshop because it allowed me to see the importance of having a strong presence on LinkedIn. I learned how to give myself a competitive advantage and stand out among other candidates,” Evanchak said. “I was also extremely grateful to meet and network with professionals in Pittsburgh. This opportunity left me feeling more confident and motivated as I continue to prepare for a future career in public relations.”
