Around 130 students initially gathered outside Jacques Audiberti secondary school at 7.30 am, attempting to block access to the building before staging a spontaneous march through the city
The blockade was unsuccessful due to a significant police presence, prompting some students to return to class while others continued their demonstration
Estimates of the number of marchers varied, with reports suggesting between 60 and more than 100 participants
Organised following a call from the Union Syndicale Lycéenne (USL), the protesters marched through central Antibes towards Jacques Dolle vocational secondary school, hoping to encourage other students to join them
Carrying placards and megaphones, they briefly blocked a bus stop near the Jacques Dolle roundabout
Around 30 municipal and national police officers monitored the demonstration to ensure safety on the busy roads
Despite repeated attempts to mobilise students from Jacques Dolle, nobody joined the march
The protesters also considered continuing towards Léonard de Vinci secondary school, but the gathering eventually dispersed peacefully at around 10.30 am
The students are demanding the reform or abolition of Parcoursup, France’s higher education admissions platform
They are also calling for improved school facilities, more teachers, lighter timetables and additional places at universities and other higher education institutions
The demonstration forms part of a wider student protest movement that began in September and has since spread across France
Although Friday’s mobilisation was smaller than organisers had hoped, participants said they remained determined to make their concerns heard
