Synopsis: The $1-million feasibility study covers conservation, exhibition standards and infrastructure, laying the groundwork for development while preserving the museum’s historical value
Cambodia and France on Thursday handed over the results of a feasibility study for the modernisation and expansion of the National Museum, following a €900,000 ($1 million) French grant supporting the two-year study from 2024 to 2026
The findings provide a basis for considering the next steps in upgrading the museum’s infrastructure, strengthening conservation capacity, improving antiquities displays and preserving the institution’s historical value
The handover ceremony was held at the National Museum under the chairmanship of Vongsey Vissoth, Minister in Charge of the Office of the Council of Ministers. It was attended by Culture and Fine Arts Minister Phoeurng Sackona, French Ambassador Olivier Richard and officials
The study was supported by the French government through Expertise France, in collaboration with the National Museum of Asian Arts – Guimet, under the supervision of the French Embassy
Vissoth thanked the French government and partners for supporting the project and continuing to provide experts and facilitate cooperation between the National Museum and the Guimet Museum for a further two years
He said the museum plays an important role in preserving cultural heritage, conducting research, providing education and promoting national identity. Its collections reflect the artistic achievements, religious beliefs and history of the Khmer people
He added that the project aims to develop the museum into a modern cultural institution capable of strengthening conservation and exhibition standards while expanding <a href="https://jiuniversity.com/fao-globefish-engages-students-in-exploring-career-opportunities-in-the-fisheries-and-aquaculture-market-and-trade/” title=”FAO GLOBEFISH engages students in exploring career opportunities in the fisheries and aquaculture market and trade”>opportunities for research, education and public engagement
During the study, Cambodian and French experts catalogued 690 collection objects and prepared recommendations on conservation, exhibition arrangements and the safe relocation of artefacts
They also assessed the buildings’ historical, architectural and technical characteristics
Sackona said the project is a testament to the friendship and cultural cooperation between Cambodia and France, reflecting their shared commitment to preserving cultural heritage
According to the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, the initiative took shape following guidance from former prime minister Hun Sen and a summit between Cambodian leaders and the French President. The project received support from Prime Minister Hun Manet
The broader vision is to preserve the museum’s historical significance while strengthening its capacity to conserve and display national treasures. Beyond the museum, Cambodia and France have expressed commitment to cooperating on the modernisation of the National Archives and National Library
Established in 1917 and inaugurated by King Sisowath in 1920, the National Museum is Cambodia’s largest cultural institution and a major repository of historical artefacts. Its collections document history from prehistoric times through the Angkorian period
The Department of Museums began repairing the museum’s walls in March 2025 to address deterioration, peeling paint and cracks caused by natural factors and ageing. Repairs have also been carried out on the surrounding fence to improve safety while retaining its original design
The department said the work aims to preserve the century-old buildings, which form part of Cambodia’s national heritage and represent modern Khmer architectural identity
